Printing
Media Services hours or operation are Monday - Friday 8:00AM - 4:00PM.

Media Services is not open on Saturday and Sunday. No print jobs will be processed over the weekend so plan accordingly and use proper time management skills.

If you need a print for a class on Monday at 8:30AM, be sure to submit your print to media services the Friday prior to ensure your print will be ready on time.

PaperCut Account Portal
The school uses a service called PaperCut that allows us to managed and track printing throughout the school. Every student is supplied with $30 in free credits at the beginning of every semester. If all of those credits are consumed in one semester, students must add credits themselves via their PaperCut account portal. PaperCut also offers software that allows students and faculty the ability to add the various computer lab laser printers to their own device, be it a PC or Mac, Android or iOS device, or even Chromebooks. The PaperCut account portal is also the best way to submit files to Media Services for fine art or large format printing. See below for information about all of these services.

You can access your PaperCut account by logging into aacprint.artacademy.edu using your school email address and password. From there, you can check your account balance, or use the options on the left-hand column to:

Check the cost of printing in the computer labs

Transfer available credits to other users

View your transaction history

View your print history

Add credits to your account

Submit files to Media Services

Add the computer lab laser printers to your own device.

Speaking of adding the printers to your own device, you can also quickly accomplish this by simply navigating to http://aacprint.artacademy.edu:9163/setup to get started.

Watch the video below for a walk through on your PaperCut account.

Fine Art and Large Format
Media Services has the ability to print on larger format, professional Epson printers compared to the standard laser printers found in the various computer labs at the school.

You can download a digital copy of the Media Services printing guidebook here

Print Submission

Log in to PaperCut and find the "Submit Print Job to Media Services" option in the left-hand column.

You can also click here to access that form.

This will open a new tab/window with a form you'll need to fill out with some details about how you want your file(s) printed.

After you've submitted your files via this form, you'll be created with a confirmation page and an email will be sent to your AAC email account.

You can have your files printed on a variety of paper types. To see what these papers look like in person, there are examples hanging outside the Media Services room.

Paper Types

Matte

Flat, no shine or shimmer at all, similar to nice drawing paper.

Semimatte

Subtle shine, similar to poster material.

Luster

Moderate shine, with a subtle, silvery quality. Great for color photos!

Glossy

Very shiny, high gloss. Also good for color photos.

Canvas

Coated canvas material, very durable but also very textured.

Cost

All paper types except canvas have the same cost associated with them.

Matte, Semimatte, Luster, Glossy

$0.25 a linear inch.

Canvas

$0.50 a linear inch.

Some examples of standard paper sizes and costs:

8" x 10" = $2.00

8.5" x 11" = $2.25

11" x 17" = $2.75

17" x 22" = $4.25

24"x36" = $6.00

Prints are charged by length, so you can save money by combining multiple images into one wide image on whatever software you’re working in. The goal is to achieve the shortest length possible by placing the longest edge of your images widthwise and not exceeding the maximum width of 44”. For example, an 8” x 10” image on standard paper printed by its longest edge (10”) would be $2.50, as opposed to printing it by its shortest edge (8”) for $2.00. If you were to combine two 8” x 10” images into one 8” x 20” image within the 44” width bounds, then you’ll be charged $2.00 for one print of two images instead of $4.00 for two separate prints.

Print completion Time

Please allow 24-hours for printing.

Print jobs are not guaranteed to be finished the day you submit them.

Before you submit your files, please take the time to look over the "How to Format Your Files" section of the help website here.

How will I know when my prints are ready?

After Media Services has printed off your work, they will charge your PaperCut account.

When your PaperCut account is charged you will be notified via your AAC email. This indicates that your print is ready for pickup.

The print will be either hanging in the hallway or sitting on the table outside media services.

24"x36" = $6.00

11" x 17" = $2.75

17" x 22" = $4.25

24"x36" = $6.00

How To Format Your Files
Size and Dimensions
* Open the file in Photoshop, click on "Image" in the top menu bar and select "Image Size..."
* A new window will open showing the height and width of the image
* Next to those dimensions will be the type of measurement being used, typically this is set to either pixels or inches
* If the dimensions are in pixels, change it to inches
* Ensure those dimensions are correct for how large you want the file printed
* In addition, ensure the "Resolution" is set to at least 300 (but no more than 600) for the best quality print
Color Profile
* For the most accurate color reproduction, it is important to set what is called a color profile in your image(s)
* Color profiles enable the printer to match what you see on your screen as close as possible
* For Photoshop, you'll want to use the "sRGB IEC61966-2.1" profile
** For new images, you can select the profile from the New Document screen
** For existing images, or to simply check, click on "Edit > Assign Profile..." and then view or choose from the list
* For Illustrator, you'll want to use the "sRGB IEC61966-2.1" profile as well
** For new images, in the new document screen, select "RGB Color" for the Color Mode, and it should default to the correct one
** For existing images, or to simply check, click on "Edit > Assign Profile..." and then view or choose from the list
* To learn more about color profiles and how they work check out these videos
** Photoshop - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Azb17GbZpxY
** Illustrator - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_17sMJp2tzY

File Formats
* The printing software the school uses is very particular to what types of files it can print
* Currently the only supported formats are JPG (JPEG), TIFF, and PDF
** You can read about different types of image formats at https://99designs.com/blog/tips/image-file-types/
* You should only submit flattened, or layer-less, versions of these files as well (jpg's are automatically flat)
* To flatten a file, open it in Photoshop and go to "File" and choose "Save As..."
* Choose the file type you want to save the image as, but also uncheck the "Layers" box
* Name and save it to create a flattened file
* Flat files ensure all elements in your file, such as special fonts, will be included in the print
File Naming
* It is imperative you include your name in the file before submitting it to Media Services
* Large format prints are manually charged to your Papercut account, and we won't print a file if we can't charge an account
** For instance, if you submit a file called "Image001.pdf", we can't determine who submitted that file, and it won't be printed
** However, if you submit a file called "Barnaby Jones Project 1.pdf", we know who to charge and will print that as soon as possible
* If you have multiple prints, you can save time by simply putting all of them in one folder with your name, instead of naming each one, and then submitting that

General Printing
What printers are available?
* For students, there are color laser printers available in all four computer labs. See below for a description of each:
** Commons - 11x17 (Tabloid) B&W Laser Printer/Copier
** S360 - 11x17 (Tabloid) Color Laser
** S362 - 8.5x11 (Letter) Color Laser
** S366 - 8.5x11 (Letter) Color Laser
** S553 - 8.5x11 (Letter) Color Laser and 11x17 (Tabloid) B&W Laser Printer/Copier
*For staff and faculty, there are color and B&W copiers in the mailroom you can use as printers. Submit an IT Ticket if you need access to these.

How do I go about using these printers?
* You can log in to any lab computer and use them for printing
* If you have your own computer and want to use the lab printers, you can use the directions located here to add the printers to your computer.
** Keep in mind, you'll need your network login information (same as your email) to properly print to the lab printers
** When prompted for a username and password, be sure to check the "Remember This Password" for future use.
Am I being charged for printing from my own computer?
* Yes, you are. It's a good idea to login to Papercut every now and then to make sure you have enough money in your account.
* You should also receive an email indicating you are getting low on funds in your Papercut account.

How do I add more money to my Papercut Account?
* Again, log in to Papercut and click the "Add More Credit" link on the left column to add more money.
* ONLY ADD AS MUCH AS YOU NEED! THERE ARE NO REFUNDS! According to School Administration, any money added to Papercut is non-refundable.

Hey, I can't print anything!
* Here's a few things you can check if you can't print:
** Make sure there aren't any printer errors (empty toner, no paper, paper jam) before you try to print
** If using your own computer, are you on the school wifi?
** Do you have enough credit in your Papercut account?
** Are you printing to the correct printer? Make sure you're not printing to a different lab.
** If using a lab computer, are you logged in with the correct username and password?
** The generic "artacademy" account on lab computers cannot print.
Print Lab
What are the Print Lab hours?
*Monday - Friday
*8AM - 4PM
Really? Don't you take a lunch?
*Yes! The Print Lab is closed between approximately 11:30AM - 12:30PM. Since there's only one person running it, occasionally the door will be closed for other reasons as well. Please be patient and considerate during this time.
How do I submit my files?
*You'll need to log in to Papercut at http://papercut.artacademy.edu using your school email address and password
*Once logged in, look in the left-hand column for the "Submit Job to Media Services" link.
*That will open a new browser window/tab with the form you'll need to fill out to submit your file(s).

Can I bring a flash drive or external hard drive to the Print Lab instead of using the drive?
*Absolutely!
What files types are accepted?
*We accept the following FLATTENED (i.e. no layers) files:
**PDF
**TIFF
**JPG
*If your file is not flattened, any custom or special fonts you may have used will not render properly. To learn how to flatten your file properly, see the "How-To" section. In addition, anything other than these file types will be marked with a yellow dot.

What resolution should I have for my files?
*We recommend 300 dpi for the best quality.
Can I bring my own paper?
*It depends. We have inkjet printers, so whatever you bring first has to be compatible with that type of printer. However, if the paper is just some atypical or strange paper you'd like to print on, it's unlikely we can successfully print on it. Some examples of recommended paper manufacturers are:
** Epson Professional Media
** Canson-Infinity
** Hahnemühle
** InkPress
** Ilford
** Moab

*You can find all those and other supported papers at B&H Photo, which is a great resource for artists technology and materials.
*Ultimately it is at the discretion of Media Services whether or not they can print on the material you provide.

Is there a way to look at the progress of my print?
*Kind of. You'll get a confirmation email when you submit your files. Then you'll also receive an email when your prints are done and available for pickup. But there's no current way to see where you are in the queue.

How do I pickup my print?
*It will be hanging on the wall or laying on the table outside the Print Lab
I’m not seeing my print, what happened?
*Your print may have been the wrong size, maybe a low resolution, or some other problem. Come stop by the print lab to find out what you need to do next.
I have a critique in thirty minutes! Can you put me ahead of the queue?
*Prints will be completed in order of submission. Try to plan accordingly with your critiques. We recommend printing at least a day or two in advance to ensure your print is ready.
I don’t like the way my print turned out, can I get a refund?
*Refunds will be given when it is a print lab error. Refunds will not be provided for user errors such as, but not limited to:
**Improper sizing of files
**Incorrect file format
**Low resolution
**Incorrect color profile
**Stray brush strokes or lines
**Unsupported fonts
*ALWAYS double check your files before submitting to the print lab to ensure quality!

Equipment Checkout
What are the Equipment Checkout hours?
*Monday - Friday
*8AM - 4PM
How do I check out equipment
*You can check equipment status by going to http://mediaservices.artacademy.edu
*Simply come in to Equipment Checkout and fill out a checkout form with the Ian.
*Always check the equipment before you leave to make sure nothing is broken and you don't get charged for it.

Does it cost anything to check out equipment?
*Potentially. If you break equipment, you will be charged for repair or replacement of that equipment.
*The same can be said if you loose anything or if it's stolen. If you check something out, you are responsible for it.
What if I turn equipment in late?
*We will suspend your media services privileges, including printing and equipment checkout, for one week. We can also put holds on your account so you can't register for classes or receive your transcripts or diploma.
*Keep in mind, all the equipment is shared by the whole student body. If you turn something in late, chances are, someone else has been waiting on it, potentially preventing them from completing their assignments.
*Please try be respectful and considerate of both the equipment and your peers.

What type of equipment is available to check out?
*There is a variety of equipment available for checkout. Please keep in mind, some of the equipment is only available to specific, higher level students who are enrolled in specific classes. For questions about availability, either check http://mediaservices.artacademy.edu or swing by Media Services and ask Ian.
**Digital Cameras
**Film Cameras
**Tripods
**Lights
**Field Microphones
**Headphones
**Digital Projectors
**Media Players
**Drawing Tablets
**Laptops (limited quantity)
**Accessories

Is there a limit to how long I check something out
*It all depends on what you're checking out. For instance, digital cameras are in high demand, so you're only able to check those out for a few days. But we have an abundance of drawing tablets, so you can check those out for a whole semester potentially.
*For more information on how long you can check something out, just visit Ian in Media Services for more information.

* Open the file in Photoshop, click on "Image" in the top menu bar and select "Image Size..."
* If the dimensions are in pixels, change it to inches
* Ensure those dimensions are correct for how large you want the file printed
* In addition, ensure the "Resolution" is set to at least 300 (but no more than 600) for the best quality print

<youtube>https://youtu.be/GSu2iGwToR0</youtube>

24"x36" = $6.00
